Keke Palmer and LaKeith Stanfield arrived late Tuesday, more than an hour after they were supposed to be filling up cars for the movie I Love Boosters. Despite being billed for free gas, the actors vanished without a trace, leaving thousands of drivers scrambling to find them.
As traffic surged, the event unfolded in disarray. Drivers who had already been waiting for hours reported confusion as the SUVs filled up and parked in uncontrolled lines. Some vehicles were pushed into adjacent alleyways, making it difficult for others to pass through. The event caused traffic jams near the station, forcing officials to shut down the area temporarily.
Many bystanders, including 25-year-old Diana Chicas, wondered where the stars were. She said she came early because she was afraid other people would show up before her, only having enough money to buy gas or food. One of the few attendees, Sana Moore, described the event as “very unorganized,” with her friend being harassed by a man there. Event staff claimed they did not have a ticket for the event, adding that the free gas was just one part of the experience.
Palmer’s fanatic Chicas emphasized that she was ultimately there for the free gas, which is more expensive than ever in California. Meanwhile, Gov. Gavin Newsom and the ongoing U.S.-Iran conflict contributed to the high gas prices in California, according to AAA. The price at the station was $6.09 per gallon, averaging around $6.15 statewide.
